Sometimes it can be difficult when looking to choose the best two-way radio for you. You may find yourself debating between Analogue v Digital. Therefore, here we will show you a comparison between these two main types of radios.

So, what is an Analogue Radio?

Analogue Radios have been around since as early as the 1930’s, so the technology is well established and widely used across the globe. These types of two way radios transmit natural voice, so give an natural representation of input sound. Most of the time, only one conversation can occur when using analogue radios. Also, they require hardware receivers/transmitters, and as the radio gets further away from the transmitter the audio will begin to be impaired and eventually will lose all signal.

Benefits of Analogue Radios

  • Accessories and additional items are readily available for these radios as they have been around for a long time
  • Analogue systems are generally very easy to use
  • Analogue radios tend to be cheaper to buy than Digital Radios

Disadvantages of Analogue Radios

  • The vast majority of the time, you are only able to have one conversation at a time when using the same channel
  • Software catered for businesses is not available for analogue radios
  • Analogue radios tend to have a smaller area coverage in comparison to Digital radios.

What is a Digital Radio?

Digital two way radios operate using numerical transmission in the form of binary code (0 or 1’s) , therefore the quality of the sound is much clearer. Digital radios also have the ability to sense background noise and filter it out. These radios have a wider coverage range, and as long as you stay within this range, sound quality will not vary. Digital radios can also have additional software such as GPS, text messages, data tracking, and ability for multiple simultaneous conversations. However, this is reflected in the price of digital radios and the user interface is generally harder to operate.

Benefits of Digital Radios

  • Multiple conversations can take place on a single channel
  • Background noise reduced due to algorithms in the radios that help eliminate it
  • A wide range of software apps are available for these radios

Disadvantages of Digital Radios

  • More time consuming for first time users to learn how to use
  • More expensive due to the relative modernity of the technology
  • If there is too much Radio Frequency noise, Digital radios can experience malfunctions
